The first hurdle to launching a website...

In spite what anyone tells you, your website building starts way before any actual building takes place.

The very first hurdle with starting an income generating website is choosing an affordable website hosting provider, one that will not eat into your profits with unexpected extra costs. But not only this, you want a reputable website host that is reliable and provides top of the range performance that you can grow with.

Now, depending on whether you are an agency or an individual, your anticipated volume of website visitors; client budget, and the type of project at hand will determine which type of website hosting is best suited for your specific needs.

Ideally you’ll want one that will allow you to avoid getting your hands dirty with any technical tasks.

The very first thing you will need to have ready before you actually start building your website is a registered domain name.

Assuming you already have a registered domain name. You may still have to ensure that your domain name is mapped with your new website hosting provider.

If not, most hosting companies provide registration during their sign up process, which actually makes the task a little easier.

Once your domain name and website hosting are ‘connected’ you are ready install and start building with WordPress.

We recommend managing all your domains from one place if possible. For this we use Hover and Namecheap.

Our recommended website hosting roster covers a range of budgets for the best performance and service for the price. These are the ones we feel cover a wide range of different user needs:

Gutenberg or Page Builder?

This is the fun part, told you it wouldn’t take long…

… and neither will your website building experience.

With at least 1 of our following recommendations, you can be up and running literally in a day.

Thanks to the extensibility and power of the WordPress platform we can all now enjoy creating custom websites and page layouts, “right down to the nearest pixel”.

Gutenberg was first introduced to the WordPress platform in December 2018. And has been a ‘game-changer’ with regards to native WordPress page and layout editing.

In many ways Gutenberg provides a feasible alternative to WordPress visual / drag and drop page builders

Amongst all the WordPress visual (wysiwyg) drag and drop page editors Divi, by ElegantThemes has been well noted as being the most intuitive and easiest to learn.

However, that does not mean it is the best solution for your specific needs. For example, if you’re requirement is of a dogmatically structured nature, then we would highly recommend

note: not to be mistaken for project Gutenberg

Google Adsense

Monetisation Step 1: Display Google Ads on Your WordPress Website

This lesson will give you a basic understanding of what you need to do, in order to start displaying Google Adsense Ads on your WordPress website.

  1. Create a Google Adsense account

  2. Configure, then add the relevant generated script to your websites <header> and <body>

  3. Now configure and generate the  code for displaying ads

The above provides an overview of the necessary actions that all users need to perform and does not cover the additional details specific to your unique website

Typically, from the Widgets area of your WordPress dashboard. Use the HTML widget for adding your unique Google Adsense code and displaying ads in your websites side bar.

Alternatively you can place the code to fit the layout of your custom page layouts.

Whilst you are at it you may as well sign up for the whole Google marketing ‘stack’. Here’s what’s currently relevant:

Sponsors and Partner Programs

Monetisation Step 2: Promoting and selling other peoples products...

There is nothing more liberating as an individual than setting up a business that sells and promotes a product or service where you do not have to deal with customers yourself…

Mentions, Reviews, News and How-tos...

Find a sponsor for your website and get paid for your great content.

All you need to do is talk or write about a product or services and demonstrate its usefulness through practice. Now, I say “all you have to do…”, but actually there can much more to it than just talking and writing about products and services.

You need to package the product or service alongside your own content or brand, creating a platform of relevance.

Alternatively, you can provide your own clients or customers with products that are relevant to what you actually offer as a service or product yourself, and receive commission for any purchases made by your clients or customers.

Displaying Ads on Your Site

I get the feeling that many people are put-off by advertising. However, if you are starting from scratch, with a small budget, displaying ads on your website may be your only readily available means of generating some revenue, even if just a small amount.

Don’t like ads?

Monetising your website can take form in a number of ways that does not require displaying ads on your website. If you have a mailing list or membership site for example, you can provide your audience with personalised offers and information from your sponsors.

How about sponsors?

Consulting is another angle for monetising your website, or at least using your website for attracting new leads.

By showcasing what you do, you will ideally attract an interested and relevant audience who may also like what your sponsors have to offer.

Theoretically, you would need to know a product or service in order to promote it. In other words; be a user of that product or service. Now, whilst it may be ideal, as well as useful, this is not always entirely necessary.

Sometimes it just takes knowing about, or understanding certain nuance concerning an industry.

Find sponsors for your website

There can be varying disparities between one Affiliate / Partner program to another.

Some provide excellent resource and marketing assets, guides and tips, whilst some hardly anything more than a referral link. Either way, your content creation skills and ideas will need to be unleashed.
